How to Challenge Your Dog’s Mind

If you’re away at work during the day, your dog can easily get bored. If your dog has no way to stimulate their mind all day, you’ll want to challenge them mentally when you get home, in addition to your nightly exercise. Try these things at home to keep your pup’s mind sharp!

Teach Them a New Trick
The number one way to keep your dog’s mind sharp is by keeping up with their training routine. Teaching your dog new tricks keeps them engaged and really challenges them to stay focused. Remembering more and more commands will keep them busy, and less destructive when they’re home alone.

Toys and Games
There are certain toys and games designed to keep your pets stimulated. If you can’t play with them or need to give them something to do while you’re at work, this is the perfect solution. Toys that hold treats are great options because it will force your pup to think outside the box to get the inside.

Use Their Sense of Smell
Your dog’s strongest sense is their scent and is tied directly to their brain. Nose games, or scent games really help them to hone in on their mental exercises. Hide treats around the home and watch as they search for them. Stay close and celebrate with them when they find it.

Go Fetch!

Giving your dog a task to do, even something as simple as a game of fetch or Frisbee helps their mind. If your dog is focused on a certain job, they’ll feel important. Try going for a difficult hike, within reason, or try swimming. Find tasks that go with your dog’s breed. It’ll be a fun activity as well as a way to heighten their special skills.

Keep your dog busy, and their mind stimulated to stop destructive behaviors and build positive habits. If you have any questions for our team, feel free to reach out at (602) 559-5500
