National Cat Health Month

Happy National Cat Health Month! Did you know that across the U.S., there are millions more owned cats than owned dogs, yet cats visit veterinarians less frequently than dogs? Surprisingly, this does not indicate that cats are healthier than dogs! Cats tend to be more difficult to transport, and often get stressed out while travelling in a car or in a box. Thus, they don’t always get the veterinarian care that they deserve.

Though cats typically take better care of themselves better than dogs, this isn’t always the case when it comes to their health. Here are some things to keep in mind in regards to your cat’s health:

  • Changes in a cat’s health can happen in a short period of time.

  • Sick cats often show no signs of illness, but early detection allows for early intervention

  • Semi-annual visits give you and your veterinarian the opportunity to closely monitor changes in your cat’s behavior and attitude that require further investigation.

It’s important to stay informed about your cat’s health. Here are some other facts about cat’s health to help you keep them feeling its best:

  • Some sick cats won’t eat regular cat food, but they will eat human baby food. Don’t worry, this isn’t spoiling your pet.

  • Some cats are diabetic for a short time and recover. Other cats are diabetic for the rest of their lives and need insulin shots.

  • Declawing amputates a bone in the toe. Don’t take it lightly, just as you wouldn’t take lightly your physician amputating your toe. Cats without claws can have difficulty defending themselves outside, and they can’t climb trees to escape.

  • Cats prefer litter boxes that are at least 1.5 times the length of their bodies. If you cater to your cat’s desires, it’s more likely to use the litter box.
