Dog Friendly Memorial Day

Memorial Day is May 29th this year, which is right around the corner. Many people consider this the start of summer. School is out and summer is here, at least in Arizona! Memorial Day is a time to get the family together and lay out pool side, or head out camping. Take the extra day to spend quality time together, and don’t forget Fido.

Pool Parties

Easily one of the most popular summer activities in the desert, pool parties are sure to be a hit this weekend. Dogs definitely love to be part of the party, and with a few precautions, it’s easy to include them. Even though temperatures aren’t as high as they will soon get, the pavement will still be hot in the direct sunlight. Ensure there is proper shade for your pup to lay in if they get hot. Keep fresh water in the shade for them to keep them from drinking pool water. If your dog is not an experienced swimmer, make sure they are well supervised around the pool.

Camping

If you’re headed north to cooler temperatures, finding shade won’t be a problem. Before you head out, make sure you know the rules and regulations regarding pets at the campsite. Dogs who have had obedience training will do well at campsites, especially during a busy memorial day weekend. If there is hiking available, make sure your dog is conditioned, and make sure you go early in the morning to avoid high temperatures. Bring lots of water, and put dog food in a airtight ziploc bag to keep fresh.

Local Events

We live in a great city, with something always going on! This weekend is no exception. There are multiple events in the Phoenix Area that are celebrating and honoring those who have fallen. From Gilbert to Anthem, you can enjoy picnics, candlelight services, and speakers at different memorials throughout the city. Bring the family, and the dogs; all are welcome. Find the complete list on AZ Central’s website. When bringing your dog out of the house this weekend, don’t forget their collar and a secure leash. As always, bring lots of water.

Memorial Day is a day to remember those who have served our country, as well as to spend time with loved ones and enjoy warm weather. Before it gets too hot, spend time in the great outdoors with any of these dog friendly activities. If you have any questions, call us at 602-559-5500.
