Walk Your Dog Week

October 1st through the 7th is National Walk Your Dog Week, but we think it is important to keep this mentality up all year long. Oftentimes dogs do not get as much exercise as they should because their owners are busy and neglect to walk them. Walking your dog is a great way to spend time with them and they are always so happy to go outside!

Now that the weather is finally cooling off here in Arizona, it is easier to get outside with your pets. The American Veterinary Medical Association says that over 40% of all dogs are overweight. Just like humans, it is recommended that dogs get at least 30 minutes of exercise each day to maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle. Plus, by walking your dog for 30 minutes, you also get the 30 minutes of exercise that you need!

There are so many great walking/ hiking trails around Arizona that it should be easy to pick a place to go for a stroll. Even just around your neighborhood is good as well.

Here are a few things to keep in mind while walking

  • Keep your dog on a leash, especially in heavily populated areas or busy streets

  • Make sure they are hydrated before and after the walk

  • Avoid walking during extremely hot parts of the day (would you want to walk barefoot on the concrete?)

  • Know your dog’s limits, small dogs cannot walk as far or as long as big dogs

  • Be respectful of your neighborhood/planet and clean up after your pets

Where is your favorite place to walk your dog in the valley? We would love to hear from you!
